Subscribers - you should know this newsletter does not go to social media. If you think your friends, colleagues, or mortal enemies may benefit from this newsletter, please share it with them.
The newsletter has been growing fairly steadily. I intend to keep the newsletter free forever.
I also believe in something known as the value-for-value model. If you are getting some value out of the newsletter, consider donating using the link below. It is PayPal based. It works with a variety of currencies.
Donations are not recurring. They only happen when you choose to make one.
If you do donate, you get an extra bonus. The next time you have a contract renewal, or new job offer, I will help you get a better offer (without losing the offer). Value-for-value. All you need to do is email me, and I will start the process which is very quick and straightforward.
So, if you are keen, make a donation using this link.
Enough adult talk. Before we get to the job list I want to make a suggestion related to Local Job Fairs. I am seeing more and more of these. I think SARSCVD2 made these necessary, but, now they are here to stay. A Local Job Fair (LJF) is a job fair in a country for people already in that country (or neighboring region).
These are low cost for everyone. They are great for networking. Ideally, a win-win.
My day job requires a healthy level of paranoia and a high-level focus on contractual terms. I was pondering a scenario where the LJF might be a disadvantage to those new to the expat game, the local contract.
If you attend an LJF and get an offer, you need to confirm:
How will your visa and work card be transferred
How long will you need to leave the country to be moved to a new employer
Does your current employer need to provide a letter of good standing or other paperwork
Are your health care benefits the exact same as someone hired abroad
What are your housing and summer travel benefits and do they work with a direct payment or on a reimbursement schedule
I have had friends who interviewed in-country and found a job with a higher salary. They assumed their other benefits would be the same as the expats working at the school. The truth was dark, they received a local contract. The salary was great, but the housing was more of a cost-of-living stipend and the school did not provide a summer flight. The school listed their home base as the country they were working in when they applied.
Probably nothing to worry about, but using checklists like this will ensure they know you are not to be underestimated :).
