When you leave a job, you must maintain good relationships. Additionally, you want to instill a sense of calm and organization so everyone sees you as a team player up until your very last day.
The level of success in resignation starts with sending that official email telling your boss that you will be moving on.
One of the biggest problems I have noticed, people write long narratives and create excuses. Not only is this a bad idea, but it opens the door to questions and offers/options that you likely want to avoid.
The next problem is face-to-face communication without a formal letter. Emailing someone is often the last step. Follow this pattern:
Setup a meeting
Write your letter
Print and sign your letter with the date
Meet and resign face-to-face
Hand in the letter
Email the letter with a thank you regarding the meeting
Forward a copy of the email to your personal email account
Forward all follow-up emails regarding this process as they come in
Before you begin, ensure that you want to leave and are committed to leaving. Your employer is going to advertise your position after they get the notice.
Paid subscribers will get a sample letter, rules around writing letters, and an option to email me to have letters created on their behalf.
Pretty. Sweet.
